Cervical Cancer Screening

Currently the NHS typically offers cervical screening to women 25 and over, every three years. Our patients can discuss their individual risk with our doctor and fund screening themselves, if appropriate.

Cervical Cancer us the second most common form of cancer in women under the age of 35. Luckily it is one of the easiest types of cancer to detect early. The cervical smear test identifies pre-cancerous cells enabling us to treat them before they progress to cancerous stage.

Who is at risk

  • Any sexually active female
  • Those who started to be sexually active in their teens or who have had multiple partners
  • Anyone infective with the HPV (Wart) virus
  • Smokers
  • Contraceptive pill users
  • Anyone with low immunity

What is HPV?

  • This is commonly known as the Wart Virus and there are over 100 different types
  • Type numbers 16 & 18 are known to cause cervical Cancer
  • 50% of sexually active males and females will contract HPV at some point in their lifetime
  • Infection with this incredibly common virus is often symptomless and spread is not fully prevented by condoms

We can offer same day appointments for smear tests with results available within 5 working days. In addition we can test for the presence of the cancerous types of HPV (16&18)
